Punjab Transport Company Launches Electric Buses in Lahore, Pioneering Eco-Friendly Transit Solutions

The Punjab Transport Company has initiated a significant shift toward sustainable urban mobility by rolling out 27 electric buses in Lahore, marking a major milestone in eco-friendly public transportation. This initial fleet, part of the Punjab Green Development Program supported by the World Bank, aims to enhance Lahore’s public transit network and alleviate transport gaps on previously inactive routes.

An annual budget of 25 million rupees has been allocated for hiring operators, with preparations well underway. The company is set to open tenders to national and international operators, with awards expected in the first week of November.

Each 2.55-meter-wide bus will accommodate 44 to 49 passengers, potentially serving up to 6,000 daily commuters. The imported buses, built to last with a 12-year warranty, will come equipped with repair toolkits, ensuring long-term maintenance and efficiency. This pilot initiative represents a forward-looking step toward sustainability in Punjab’s public transport infrastructure.
